Topic of Seminar: Network Anonymity using Onion Routing.

Date: 12th August, 2016.

Venue: Seminar Hall, Shree L R Tiwari College of Engineering, Mira Road (E).
Number of participants: 43

Name of Speaker: Prof. Nilesh Patil, IT Department, MCT’s, and R.G.I.T.

Objectives:

  • To understand networking concepts and practice of subsequent technologies in the IT Industry.

Methods and Description:

  • Onion routing is a technique for anonymous communication over a computer network. In an onion network, messages are encapsulated in layers of encryption, analogous to layers of an onion. Demonstration of the technique for encryption of the data, including the next node destination IP address, sending it through a virtual circuit comprising successive, randomly selecting Tor relays was done.
  • Each relay decrypted a layer of encryption to reveal only the next relay in the circuit in order to pass the remaining encrypted data on to it. The final relay decrypted the innermost layer of encryption and sent the original data to its destination without revealing, or even knowing, the source IP address. Because the routing of the communication is partly concealed at every hop in the Tor circuit, this method eliminates any single point at which the communicating peers can be determined through network surveillance that relies upon knowing its source and destination.

Outcomes:

  • Students understood how Onion routing is implemented by encryption in the application layer of a communication protocol stack, nested like the layers of an onion.
